Lake Winnipesaukee Fishing Derbies History & Background

The Winni Derby (spring open-water fishing tournament) began in 1980 as a way to manage landlocked salmon populations in Lake Winnipesaukee. Over time, it became a highlight of the Lakes Region calendar, drawing anglers and families each May.
The Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby, started around 1979, quickly grew into one of New England’s largest winter fishing events. Hosted by the Meredith Rotary Club, the derby combines competition, community, and charity. Proceeds from the event support local projects in Meredith, Sandwich, Center Harbor, and Moultonborough.
The events are not only about fishing. They are also a cultural gathering, where bob houses dot the lake, local businesses see a surge of visitors, and the community comes alive in the depths of winter.
In recent years, challenges such as warmer winters and thinning ice have required adjustments. At times, fishing has been extended to other New Hampshire waters beyond Lake Winnipesaukee. Similarly, the open-water Winni Derby has occasionally been canceled due to low salmon stocks. These shifts highlight both the popularity and the fragility of the tradition.
